Technopreneurship or Entrepreneurship

Image
Technopreneurship or Entrepreneurship Get out of your quiet space & go where you think the opportunities are. If you don't know where to go, stop at a park somewhere. Get out your laptop PC & figure out 20 likely customers. Rank them in order of importance. If you can't fathom 20 likely customers, something is off & you need to go back & take another road. Now take the 3 lowest-ranked of your 20 - not the highest - & go talk to them about your idea. While you're there, ask them for money in exchange for some future interest in using the results of your idea. Why will they see you? Because you're Just You , founder & CEO of Whatever-You-Call-It, which has novel ideas that could help Whoever-They-Are - because those ideas will change their world. Don't see your most important prospects 1st. You're not ready - don't have your strategy down enough yet. Better still to think up prospects number 21 through 40 & see them 1st, rather than...

The Muhammadan Reality

Image
The Muhammadan Reality The Sufi Najm al-Diin al-Raazii in his Mirsaad al-'ibaad writes that just as in the case of a tree one first plants a seed which then grows into a plant that gives branches, then leaves, then blossoms, then fruit which in turn contains the seed, so did the cycle of prophecy begin with the Muhammadan Reality, with the inner reality of Muhammad SAW, while it ended with the human manifestation of him. He thus is inwardly the beginning & outwardly the end of the prophetic cycle which he synthesizes & unifies in his being. Outwardly he is a human being & inwardly the Universal Man, the norm of all spiritual perfection. The Prophet SAW himself referred to this inner aspect of his nature as in the Hadiith , 'I am Ahmad without the miim [that is, ahad meaning Unity]; I am an Arab without the 'ain [that is rabb meaning Lord]. Who has seen me, the same has seen the Truth.' What do such sayings mean but the inward union of the Prophet SAW wit...

Business Decisions: Using Financial Statements

Image
Business Decisions: Using Financial Statements The following is a short list of some of the users & uses of financial statements. This list is by no means complete: 1. Prospective investors, to decide in which companies to invest; 2. Equity & debt investors, to monitor the performance of management; 3. Banks & other lenders, to decide on whether to make new loans, or continue existing loans; 4. Investment analysts, money managers, & stock brokers, to make investment recommendations or decisions for their clients; 5. Rating agencies (such as Standard & Poor's, Moody's, & Dun & Bradstreet), to assign credit ratings; 6. Major suppliers & customers, to evaluate the strength & financial staying power of the company as a long-term resource for their business; 7. Labour unions & employee associations, to assess what the company may be able to afford to pay in upcoming labour negotiations; 8. Management, to assess the company's standing wit...

Contemplation in Sufism

Image
Contemplation in Sufism Sufism is an active participation in a spiritual path & is intellectual in the real meaning of this word. Contemplation in sufism is the highest form of activity & in fact Sufism has always integrated the active & contemplative lives. That is why many Sufis have been teachers & scholars, artists & scientists, & even statesmen & soldiers. If we were to use mysticism in its original sense as that which is concerned with the 'Divine Mysteries' & consider as mystic men like St. Augustine, Eckhart or Gregory of Palamas then we could certainly call Sufism Islamic mysticism & the Sufis mystics. But then the current colour given to this word must be removed & its original meaning re-instated. In any case it must be remembered that Sufism is to follow a spiritual path based on the Glorious Quran & prophetic practice actively with the aim of gaining that illuminative knowledge ( al-'irfaan ) which is the ultimate goa...

The Advantages of the Matrix Organization

Image
The Advantages of the Matrix Organization An organizational concept closely related to unit management is the matrix system. This type of unit functions best in an environment with diverse product lines, high levels of technology, & new product introduction. In matrix management, each middle managers has 2 bosses. While the plant manager reports only to the vice-president of operations, subordinates in materials, production engineering, & quality report both to the plant manager & to their counterparts at corporate HQ, the directors of materials, production engineering, & quality. The matrix organization combines functional & direct line reporting relationships. While the materials manager, e.g., is responsible to the plant manager for day-to-day results, the materials manager is also responsible to the HQ materials director for functional systems. The HQ director is, in turn, responsible for uniform materials policies & procedures throughout the different plant...

Economic Criteria

Image
Economic Criteria There was more than 1 way of looking at a particular problem. The factors were as follows: 1. Required rate of return; 2. Freight rate (timecharter rate); 3. Permissible price for ship; 4. Net present value (NPV). i) NPV (Net Present Value): If the acquisition cost of a ship, the required rate of return on the capital invested (or discount rate), the operating costs each year, the cargo quantity transported each year & the corresponding freight rate (which together determine annual income) are known, the present worth of each item of income & expenditure can be calculated. These items can then be totalled to find the NPV (or Worth). The present worth of each annual cash flow can be calculated for each of the N years of the ship life, often in a tabular form. One way of regarding NPV is as an instantaneous capital gain, if positive (or loss, if negative) or as a discounted profit. Consequently, designs with the highest NPVs are sought. The term NPV is sometimes...

Resistance & Powering Coefficients

Image
Resistance & Powering Coefficients In order to evaluate the success of the extrapolation process from model to full size, it is necessary to measure the resistance of the ship with sufficient accuracy for comparison between the measured ship resistance & that predicted from model tests. Present methods of measuring ship resistance are inaccurate & costly. The ship has to be taken out of service & special instrumentation & personnel have to be on board. Inaccuracies in the resistance measurement result from: 1. Noisy thrust measurements if a thrustmeter is installed or even worse - if thrust is not measured, from thrust estimates derived from propeller torque or engine power; 2. Use of scaled model measured wake fraction, thrust deduction factor & thrust coefficient, which we know suffer from scale effect; 3. Inaccuracies in speed determination from differentiation of distance with respect to time; & 4. Correction for current, wind & waves. Delays in tria...
