Structural Elements of Jack-Up Platforms: A simple structural approximation of a jack-up rig is one of a “3-D” portal frame. The legs constitute the “columns” of the frame and the hull forms the horizontal element. For the stability and structural integrity of such a structure, the connection between the hull and each leg should necessarily be capable of resisting large moments generated by the horizontal environmental load effects. This “joint fixity” or moment connection is achieved in different ways on different types of jack-up platforms. The Hull is generally made of a stiffened plate “box” structure, often consisting of an upper deck, an intermediate (or equipment) deck and a bottom deck.
