Undertake some economic enterprise even if you are wealthy. Try to establish a private business, regardless of how small it may be or how busy or scientifically oriented you are. - Imam Hasan al-Banna. Bibliography: Management literature has become so vo1uminous that no one can hope to keep up with it. Even to pick out the “best” books is a fruitless attempt. What I have tried to do is to prepare a list—admittedly overlong—of the books whicha fairly large number of friends, experienced managers in a number of countries around the world, have found to be stimu-lating, readable, and worthwhile. Even so, the list suffers from being heavily biased to-ward American authors. To make the list more useful, I have divided the books into major categories and have not hesitated to list a title more than once if it seemed to me to deserve mention in several categories. Most management books take Western, and especially American, management for granted. For this reason, I have included a small list of six titles on Japanese management. They wil1 not only help the Western reader to understand the one non-Western manage-rial system in a highly developed country, but willalso give him a better insight into the cultural and historical roots of his own system.
