Books that I had Read

Bloggers love to share their hobbies with readers - hence my listing of books that I had read or wish I had finished reading. Naval architect's library can be varied and interesting. Some comments are inserted to add some colour to the list. The list is random but starts with more interesting topics first:

1. Translation of the Holy Quran, Abdullah Yusuf Ali - Perhaps one of the most comprehensive translation of the Quran to date. I had also read other translations by Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall and some Malay translations. Tafsir by Syed Qutb, "Fi Zilal Quran" and Prof Dr Hamka, "Tafsir Al-Azhar" are very knowledgeable.
2. Translation of Sahih Muslim (hadith).
3. Bucaille, "The Quran, the Bible & Science".
4. Hassen Meeah, "The Light" - On the 99 Holy & Beautiful names of Allah SWT.
5. M. Said, "210 Do'a Mustajab" - A collection of prayers to be practiced by the Muslims.
6. Drucker, "Managing for Results", Pan, London.
7. Clarke & Lipp, "The Way to the Global Management", Muse - How managers in Japan and UK think.
8. Lewis, ed., "Principles of Naval Architecture", SNAME, USA - Comes in 3 volumes, very detailed and include some worked examples.
9. Rawson & Tupper, "Basic Ship Theory", Longmans, UK - I had used the earlier edition whilst studying for my BSc (Engineering: Naval Architecture & Shipbuilding) at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK - Very useful Questions & examples included.
10. Henshall, "Medium & High Speed Diesel Engines for Marine Use", IMarEST, UK.
11. Ansoff, "Corporate Strategy" - some interesting thoughts on entrepreneurship & strategic thinking.
12. De Bono, "Lateral Thinking" - for thinkers & non-thinkers alike.
13. A. Syed Sulaiman Nadvi, trans. by Mazlan Muslim, "Pelayaran Bangsa Arab", DBP, KL, 1992 - I translated the book whilst working at the Marine Dept. Malaysia, Port Klang, Selangor. It covers Arab navigation history.
14. Kelly & Kelly, "What They Really Teach You at Harvard", Grafton, USA - Actually the popular title is "What They Don't Teach You at Harvard. Anyway, the above book gives you an idea of the Harvard Business School.
15. Muhammad Qutb, "Islam the Misunderstood Religion" - The interesting book can now be download from the website.
16. "La tahzan - Don't be Sad" - the useful book is also downloadable from the internet.
17. Buxton, "Engineering Economics & Ship Design" - provide detailed analysis of maritime economics useful for naval architects & maritime professionals.
18. Robbins & Coulter, "Management", 7th ed., Prentice Hall, USA - useful guide for managers in the commercial world.
19. Muckle, "Strength of Ship Structures", Arnold, UK - a classic text for naval architects & structural engineers, provides good introduction to hull strength.
20. Taylor, "Introduction to Marine Engineering" - essentially marine engineering for non-marine engineers.
21. Massey, "Mechanics of Fluids" - basic introduction to marine hydrodynamics.
22. Kuo, "Business Fundamentals for Engineers", McGraw Hill, UK - useful for budding technopreneurs & entrepreneurs alike.

24. Parkinson, "Marketing" - covers marketing topics useful for engineers.
25. Diwan, "Project Management", GBC.

28. Eyres, "Ship Construction", Heinemann, UK - reference for shipbuilders & naval architects.
