It is important to mention the difficulties related to the full scale measurements and their interpretation. While the direct measurements of the ship response in terms of the structural strains, ship motions and accelerations are well mastered today, this is not true for the measurements of the local pressures and especially for the measurements of the sea states in which the ships are navigating. The most common wave radar based systems suffers from several technical difficulties and associated uncertainties. The most advanced wave measuring system will be used within this project and their implementation will be improved.” The aim of the present project is to develop and implement an improved sea state estimation procedure. The following topics have been identified as most important: Dynamic selection of ship responses to be used in the sea state Check for faulty signals Inclusion of fatigue damage estimations in the operational criteria Power prediction estimates based on semi-empirical formulas and proper estimation of added resistance in waves The project should results in an on-board software system able to run real time on a standard PC and using input from standard sensors like accelerometers and strain-gauges.
