The ego or self (nafs) always looks at the world & the spirit (ruh) always looks at the next life (akhirat). Spiritual knowledge always looks at Allah, Almighty & Exalted. He whose self (ego) defeats him is from those who are destroyed. He whose spirit is victorious over his "self", is of the pious & he whose spiritual knowledge enlightens his spirit is of the God-conscious. - Abu Yazid al-Bistami.
